Strategic Consulting

The Idea Logical Company has a special interest in the opportunities and challenges presented by digital technology to publishers, especially book and journal publishers. As co-organizers of two Electronic Publishing and Rights Conferences (sponsored by Publishers Weekly and Knowledge Industry Publications) in 1992 and 1993, we have long been involved in this medium.

Since 1995, Idea Logical Founder and CEO Mike Shatzkin has been co-chair (with Mark Bide of Mark Bide Associates in Great Britain) of VISTA's annual research program, which encompasses the creation and publication of research papers, the presentation of semi-annual Conferences in New York and London, and the leadership of The Editorial Board, a team of journalists, consultants, and academics with special knowledge of publishing.

Idea Logical's strategic clients have ranged from industry giants to the most promising recent technologically promising start-ups. SoftBook, one of the first hand-held "readers" or "Ebooks"; Sprout, pioneers of digital print-in-store technology; and OverDrive Systems, leaders in the development of digital publishing and content management processes are three companies successfully negotiating the cutting edge of a new business structure. We helped each of them to make critical decisions early in the evolution of their current business strategies.

For Simon & Schuster we helped explore the best use of sales and inventory information received by EDI from a major account; for The Butterick Company, we developed a whole new business to sell the books of all publishers to the retailers served by a pattern and crafts company.
