On August 26, 2025, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) released its StatShot Annual report for calendar year 2024. The report estimates that the U.S. publishing industry generated $32.5 billion in aggregate revenue for books and course materials across print and digital formats. That figure represents a 4.1% increase compared with $31.3 billion in 2023.

Unit sales also improved. Final industry estimates show unit volume rose 3.4% to 3.1 billion units in 2024. In 2023, unit sales had fallen 0.8% even as dollar sales rose 2.8%, meaning price increases had offset weaker volume. The 2024 numbers show both dollars and units moving in the same direction.

What the report covers

The StatShot Annual combines reported revenue from participating publishers with modeled estimates for segments where direct reporting is incomplete. Industry Insights prepared the analysis for AAP using survey responses, U.S. Census data, Circana BookScan and PubTrack Digital figures, Bowker Books In Print, and other industry sources covering 2020 through 2024.

Publishers Weekly reported on the release (August 26, 2025) that the final annual figures incorporated broader modeling than the preliminary StatShot data issued earlier in 2025, including segments such as PreK-12 instructional materials that were not fully represented in monthly reports.

Format and channel notes

Trade publishers tracking consumer formats should read the aggregate figure carefully. The $32.5 billion total includes higher education, PreK-12 instructional materials, and professional publishing alongside consumer books. AAP and trade press coverage noted that ebook and audiobook revenue together accounted for roughly 14% of total publishing revenue in 2024, a useful benchmark when comparing digital share against print-heavy categories.

Why the number matters for trade publishing

For houses focused on general trade titles, the headline growth rate is encouraging but not uniform across imprints. Revenue growth at the industry level does not guarantee that every frontlist title or backlist segment performed equally. Publishers still need title-level and channel-level data to judge whether library licensing, direct sales, or retail partners are pulling their weight.
